Results:<\/strong>
The second test phase from early June to July yielded mixed results. At least the first Asian hornet was spotted \u2014 but unfortunately not correctly classified, as a wasp was mistakenly given the AH label instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raising the confidence interval to 90% has suppressed false noise; however, as shown above, many flies and wasps continue to be classified as European and Asian hornets. While it is still early in the season \u2014 and at this point hornets tend to be foraging for protein for their larvae rather than carbohydrates \u2014 a change of the lure liquid should be considered in order to attract more insects. This will be monitored further throughout July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stations continue to be in good shape, and the previous changes have proven effective: all stations are permanently reachable and generating events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hardware Adjustments:<\/strong>
While the initial design did account for the stations being exposed to wind and weather, the household rubber bands pressing the lure liquid bottles against the wooden base from below are not suited for frequent temperature changes. At two of the four stations, these had already snapped after a few weeks. Since the lure liquid has so far evaporated only slightly and the first filling is expected to last until the end of the season, a cable tie has now been placed around the bottleneck to prevent the bottle from slipping through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software Adjustments:<\/strong>
The image above reveals a clear weakness. Until now, the system was only able to track a single insect per camera frame \u2014 it always picked the first moving object and ignored all others. This issue was known but had been deprioritized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The July update introduces multi-object tracking: each detected insect now receives its own stable ID across frames and is tracked individually. The assignment of “which movement belongs to which track” is handled via a lightweight comparison of position and overlap of motion bounding boxes \u2014 entirely without the computationally intensive image tracker used previously, which saves processing power on the Raspberry Pi. The AI species recognition (VespAI) continues to run efficiently, but now only once per frame, with results then assigned to the appropriate track. Technically, the previous single-object state has been replaced by a Track<\/code> structure and a dedicated assignment module; the processing pipeline now delivers a list of events per frame instead of just one. The changes are in a new branch feature\/multi-tracking<\/code>, allowing them to be tested on the prototypes and easily reverted if issues arise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
