Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The first test phase of one month is over and, as expected, there was some room for improvement. There have been no sightings of Asian or European hornets so far, even though some have already been spotted in the area. It is still early in the season, which means \u2014 logically \u2014 no nests can be found yet. The confidence threshold of the VespAI system has deliberately been kept low at 75% in order to generate any events at all. However, this also resulted in reflections, wasps, and even ants being classified as hornets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hardware Adjustments:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n It became apparent that two stations have been discovered and occupied by ants. This is difficult to prevent \u2014 however, the wicks were thickened slightly with a knot to ensure ants have no way of falling into the bottle. Software Adjustments:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Several software adjustments have been made. Since the stations are often located somewhat far from the Wi-Fi routers, the connection dropped frequently and could only be restored by restarting the Raspberry Pi. A new cron job that restarts the Raspberry Pi every morning at 6 a.m. reliably resolves this issue. In addition, the VespAI confidence threshold is being raised to 90% to filter out reflections and wasps, and a minimum size for tracking is being implemented so that small insects such as ants no longer generate events. Furthermore, two stations showed poor image quality due to varying lighting conditions and bottle positioning. This is being corrected by optimizing the autofocus with a new variable for distance and by converting the color scheme from RGB to BGR. Other than that, the stations are still in good shape \u2014 concerns that the lacquered wooden board might weather or that water could get into the Raspberry Pi have not materialized so far. The beer crates also appear to be heavy enough that the wind has not shifted them and thereby changed their compass orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
