Anyone who enjoys tinkering can design their own setup &#8211; as long as the final result works reliably. Only the Python code running on the Raspberry Pi, especially the part responsible for uploading events, should not be modified, as this could affect the functionality of the website for all users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make getting started easier, I would like to present <em>my<\/em> bait station here as a reference design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-0e47273b wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/hornet-radar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_9759-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-647\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7499999806032347;width:370px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hornet-radar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_9759-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/hornet-radar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_9759-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/hornet-radar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_9759-2000x2667.jpeg 2000w, https:\/\/hornet-radar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_9759-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It consists of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A beverage crate (slightly elevated for increased stability)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A wooden board, spray-painted green<br>(color tone: RAL 6018, used as a green-screen background and weather protection)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three metal angle brackets used as spacers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A white lampshade (rain protection and light diffusion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 3D-printed lid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A compass for alignment to true north<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A bottle containing the lure liquid with a piece of cloth acting as a wick, pushed upward from below through a hole in the wooden board and held in place by a rubber band.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Material costs<strong>:<\/strong> approx. \u20ac20<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-0e47273b wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following hardware components are used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raspberry Pi 5 (4 GB RAM, 8 GB MicroSD card)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pi Camera Module 3<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USB-C power supply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Custom-designed 3D-printed case with ventilation holes<br><code><a href=\"https:\/\/hornet-radar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Raspberry Pi_Camera_Cover_opt_v2.stl\" download=\"\">Download STL Projectfile<\/a><\/code> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Material costs: approx. \u20ac120<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The camera should be positioned as centrally as possible above the bait liquid to achieve good 360\u00b0 coverage. The lure liquid must not evaporate too quickly and must not become a trap for insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Raspberry Pi Setup<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Raspberry Pi is the core of the station. It detects motion, analyzes camera frames for hornets, and\u2014upon a positive detection\u2014uploads the event data to a database, where it is visualized on this website.
